UNESCO Draft Recommendation on the Urban Historic Landscape

The General Conference of UNESCO decided at its 35th session (October 2009) that existing UNESCO standard-setting instruments relating to urban heritage should be supplemented through a new recommendation. A meeting of international experts invited in their personal capacity was held from 17 to 19 February 2010 at the UNESCO Headquarters and their work resulted in the “Draft Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape,” which can be found here:

ICOMOS is holding a consultation among its membership on the draft recommendation so that it can support and contribute to the work of UNESCO. All members who wish to participate are invited to either send their suggestions and comments on the draft recommendation by email toPUH@icomos.org or to post these on the special on-line ICOMOS discussion forum by 15 November 2010.

The on-line discussion forum is accessible to the entire ICOMOS membership. To post your own contribution or to view those posted by colleagues, just register on the ICOMOS Forum interface –http://forums.icomos.org/ucp.php?mode=register – using the ICOMOS membership number mentioned on your membership card and an email address – and then login. If you have already registered, you can login directly via – http://forums.icomos.org/ with your username and password. Once you have registered and logged in, go to the “Board index” and under “Specialized Forums” click on the heading “Consultation: UNESCO Draft Recommendation on the Urban Historic Landscape” and post your comment in your preferred language.  If you need help with posting comments – see the FAQ section on the page.

ICOMOS is also working with UNESCO to build a glossary of technical terms related to the draft recommendation. The work is starting in English and French and it is expected to cover all official languages. Should you be interested by this aspect of the work, please let the International Secretariat know, at the above mentioned e-mail address.
