Floods in Pakistan: Appeal for Solidarity

Pakistan has been afflicted by a calamity of unprecedented magnitude. The floods in the River Indus and its tributaries have ravaged millions of acres of fertile land, uprooted over 20 million people, seriously affecting their livelihoods and their future.

THIS IS AN UNPRECEDENTED CATASTROPHE AND IMMEDIATE MONETARY HELP IS NEEDED.

Immediate Disaster Relief has already begun. The Institute of Architects, Pakistan (IAP) has identified a handful of credible organizations that have a track record of humanitarian services and are already doing remarkable relief work and providing organized emergency medical services in the field. IAP has decided to fully extend its financial and material support to these organizations.

For the Reconstruction and Rehabilitation phase will begin when the flood waters recede. IAP plans to “adopt” in the next one year, at least 10 villages in the more neglected and remote areas where architects and students would work with the local communities and facilitate rebuilding and repairs of homes, schools, dispensaries and infrastructure, on a self-help basis. This is a long term commitment that IAP intends fulfilling through its own resources and by raising funds through national and international donors.

UIA member organizations may also wish to ‘adopt’ one or more of the thousands of small villages across the country, which need to be reconstructed. Sizes, by population, of the villages vary greatly, the ideal size to ‘adopt’ being one with about 100 families. The cost will also vary according to the level of intervention. A ball park figure of $USD 250 per home can be assumed at this time or $USD 25,000 for a small village.

The Institute of Architects, Pakistan, has set up the IAP Flood Relief Fund.

PLEASE BE AS GENEROUS AS POSSIBLE AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE “IAP FLOOD RELIEF FUND” TO HELP THE FLOOD VICTIMS OF PAKISTAN.
