ICOMOS Carbon Reduction Strategy

ICOMOS Carbon Reduction Strategy

Shared from ICOMOS, 16 January 2024

The ICOMOS Board approved the ICOMOS Carbon Reduction Strategyprepared by the AdCom Sustainability and Communications Task Force (SCTF), at its meeting of 1 September 2023, in Sydney. The objective of the Strategy is to guide and encourage ICOMOS as a whole towards reducing the carbon footprint of all our activities, whilst embracing inclusion and just transition. The Strategy includes a range of recommendations for each level of ICOMOS, from the Secretariat, through the Board, National and International Scientific Committees, Working Groups and including individual members.

The AdCom SCTF is also developing a toolkit to facilitate the operationalisation of the Strategy and we are hopeful that this will be ready for roll out in 2024.

ICOMOS is committed to the global Climate Action agenda as part of its work to protect cultural heritage around the world. We invite you to share this post widely through various media and communication channels.

You will note that some of the recommendations, such as a commitment to inclusion, can be undertaken immediately.  There are also other commitments that require further consideration and possibly statutory review and consideration, in order to normalise these actions across ICOMOS over time. We encourage all members to consider how to use the strategy to shape their own personal commitments to climate action.
