Monuments Summer 2023: A Season of Conversation

As we officially prepare for summer, we look forward to introducing our national in-person symposium, Monuments Summer: A Season of Conversation.

Throughout the past year, the Monuments Toolkit Team visited various communities and saw what the removal, relocation, and repurposing of monuments looked like in American towns and cities such as Birmingham, Charleston, San Antonio, and Harpers Ferry.  This summer, we are planning events that will highlight transformative dialogues reassessing the monument landscape.

Charleston, South Carolina: Mother Emanuel AME Church, Date TBD

  • Two panels will discuss how communities are cultivating inclusivity in the public history landscape.

San Diego, California: Cabrillo National Monument, 14 July 2023

  • This conversation will explore the framework of reinterpretation and how museums utilize controversial monuments to facilitate public engagement processes.

Richmond, Virginia: Black History History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia, 27 July 2023

  • This event will give address the future of monuments. A panel of artists who received Mellon Grants last year will give insight into their projects highlighting undertold and untold stories in Richmond.
